As our smiles settle, I grip the glass a little tighter. “I didn’t come here to celebrate.”

“I figured,” she responds, eyes on her own hands. “Listen, I get it. It was Spring Break, we were both drinking. It’s all good.”

I cock a brow, setting my glass down on the kitchen island. It’s Sunday night and the house is mostly quiet, save for the faint sound of giggling coming from the rooms upstairs.

“It wasn’t a mistake, Cassie. It wasn’t an accident or a drunken decision. Ever since I kissed you at the concert last semester, I’ve wanted to do it again.”

She wants me to apologize for the kiss. She thinks I regret it. I don’t.

“How can you say that?” she asks, green eyes wide. “You were with Skyler.”

“I know, I know.” I pinch the bridge of my nose, not really knowing how to explain what I need to. “It’s not that I didn’t care for her — that I don’t still care for her. But I also care about you. And that night on the beach, it was like the biggest moment of clarity for me.”

Cassie drops her glass to the counter and brings her fingernails to her teeth, nibbling, eyes on the tile floor.

“You can’t do this, Adam. I mean, what are you even asking me?” Her voice is shaky when she finally speaks.

“I don’t know.” I sigh, knowing none of this is coming out right. But what do I really expect? I was dating her Big Sister just a few short weeks ago and now, what? I’m going to ask her to be with me? “I guess I’m just saying that I get what you said at the Fratalina Wine Mixer now.” I shrug, lifting my eyes to hers. “You confuse me, too.”

Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).

When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.

C.J. Pinard | Above Protection | Blog Tour

Title: Above Protection (Imperfect Heroes #1)

He's bearded, angry, highly trained, and has a job to do.
She's the damsel in distress who's smarter than she looks, and doesn't want anyone's help.
Could it be they both need something neither will admit to? Fate fueled by the laws of attraction may just decide for them.

DUKE
I didn’t ask for this. I was just doing my job, and they have the nerve to put me on a Witness Protection detail? This is crap. I’ll do my assignment, then go back to my job and what I love – kicking ass and taking names. I hadn’t spent 6 years in the Marine Corps to be put on babysitting duty once I’d joined the FBI. The witness they assigned me to, Rayanne, is an annoying, brainless blonde with a sassy mouth and a body that belongs on a website you have to pay to access. Not that I noticed or anything.

RAYANNE
I can look after myself. I don’t need anyone’s help, and the government is being ridiculous for putting me in the Witness Protection Program. I'll testify against my former bosses and then go back to my life as a single girl in the big city. I love my career as a paralegal, and once this Neanderthal they’d assigned to babysit me is out of my life, I'll go back to it. I just wish he wasn’t so easy on the eyes. The beard, hard body, and that voice. Why couldn’t they have sent me someone ugly – and nice? Because Duke is neither of those things.

ABOVE PROTECTION is book 1 in the Imperfect Heroes Series.  For readers 18+.

He sighed and set the remote down. Picking up his plate, he stood but I was blocking his way. I moved right and he moved left, leaving me still blocking him. So I moved left, then he moved right, and we were still in the same predicament.

“Wanna dance?” I asked, thinking of all the times this would happen to my parents, and my daddy would ask my mom this.

Duke’s stormy blue eyes stared into mine, and setting his plate down on the end-table, he nodded slightly.

Did he just nod?

Why don’t you stay? I’m down on my knees… I heard the singer croon.

Gently slipping a hand around my waist, he pulled me flush against his body and began to sway slightly. He continued to stare at me.

I’m so tired of being lonely, don’t I give you what you need?

In complete shock at the gesture, I tried to relax into his hold but I was just… just… stunned. Was I dancing with Duke Hawthorne?

His arm went around my shoulders and his warm hand gripped my neck.

When she calls you to go, there is one thing you should know…

Slowly, I reached my right arm to his backside and wrapped it around his solid waist. My other hand reached up and rested against his hard pec muscle.

We don’t have to live this way. Baby, why don’t you stay?

His hips began to sway, and as if my body had a mind of its own, I swayed with him. I couldn’t stop staring at him. His eyes bored into mine as if he wanted to say something. My head began to move in closer to his as we made slow circles around the small living room.

I can’t take it any longer, but my will is getting stronger, but I think I know exactly what I need…

As my face got closer, his did, too. When his face was inches from mine, my hand, without my permission, reached up and touched his cheek. The scruff of his beard felt good under my sensitive fingertips.

Then, Duke was kissing me.

It was passionate – desperate – but not like last night. There seemed to be an element of emotion with it. His right hand was still around my waist, but his left was now trailing up my neck with just one finger. As his warm tongue slowly licked along the seam of my lips, I had no choice but to open my mouth slightly and accept his invitation. Not that I would have denied him in that moment.

His hand on the back of my neck was seriously hot. I raked my fingernails through his short beard, then I skated them around his neck and shoved them into his hair at the back of his head, scratching his scalp. He groaned into my mouth and I was suddenly well aware of his arousal pressed into my stomach.

As the song began to end, he danced me toward the small hallway that led to the rooms. I didn’t resist at all, just continued to let him kiss me. In a move that surprised me, he picked me up and carried me the rest of the way to my room. He broke the kiss and then stared into my eyes.

I'm a California girl living in land-locked Colorado. Lover of red wine, wearer of fabulous shoes, and a die-hard Niner fan, I'm also an editor at heart. I've written over a dozen books and short stories that contain both contemporary/new adult and paranormal romance that are a little bit badass, a little heart-wrenching, and sorta funny (to me, anyway). Almost all my books usually contain law enforcement or military undertones, since strong, brave, alpha men and women are my weaknesses. When I'm not writing, I can be found working at a very strange day job, which may or may not have some mild influences on my gripping stories - so strange, in fact, I think I'll write a book about it one day.

I'm also a proud member of the Romance Writers of America (RWA).

Twist
Gone.
I lost my mind that day.
I arrived home, to my wife’s sweet color, stripped. Her body motionless, slain in a puddle of blood, her delicate skin, riddled with multiple stab wounds. The brutality of the rape was horrendous. My precious little girl lain in the middle of the floor, pillow securely duct taped on her face. Her tiny body, left unmoving. I’ve never screamed so savagely, wishing I was dead before in my life.
Hope.
I’ve long given up on any light in my life, jaded. I wasn’t expecting to be blinded with friction, by a fucking ray of sunshine.

Sadie
Confused
I had no idea what to do with my life or my baby’s. I trusted the wrong man, who turned out to be a ghost, disappearing, leaving me scattered. I head to my brothers club, in hopes of leaning on the only shoulder I’ve ever known.
Strength
What I find instead, is a hunter. A fiercely loyal, broken man, just waiting for his next kill.

HAYDEN

Her back hits the wall and she looks taken aback. “What are you doing?” she asks, her eyes dancing around my face nervously. A spark of excitement glimmers in her baby blues.

“Things between you and I are about to get very heavy, Vi,” I start, flicking my eyes back and forth between hers. “And before all of that happens…Before I drag you down the rabbit hole with me, I have something very serious I’d like to do.”

“What?” she croaks, her voice husky and trembling.

“Tonight I just want to be a man, who walks a gorgeous woman to her doorstep…and kisses her senseless.”

She nods her permission slowly, her eyes sparking with shocked excitement. Without pause, I drop my jacket to the ground and slip my hands around her face. I stare down at her luscious, peach lips. Her hands grip my white dress shirt just above my hips, and I devilishly grin at the tickling sensation of her tiny hands on my sides.

“I haven’t kissed a woman for a while. I want to be sure I do this properly,” I say, my voice gravellier than I intended it to be.

She nods slowly and lifts her chin. I pause a mere centimetre away from her lips and change course to her cheek. I drop a feather-light kiss on that cheek, breathing in her blissful womanly scent. What is it that women have that makes them smell so incredibly divine? And Vi better than any other I’ve ever smelt? It’s like a combination of expensive shampoo and sweet sugary fruit. I quickly move over and kiss the other cheek, allowing my lips to trickle down to the curve of her jaw and then to her chin. I flick my tongue out on her chin and trail it slowly upward, grazing the tip of her lower lip. Her mouth drops with a throaty gasp, inviting me in. But I hold back. I am savouring every delicious second of this and I won’t be rushed. I press my lips to her forehead before placing another soft drop on her perfect button nose. Then I finally pull back to take in and appreciate her sexy awed expression.

“Is that all—” she starts, but I crush my mouth to hers before she can finish her smartarse remark.
